One tweet has turned a Davenport, Florida grandmother into an internet darling who’s adored by strangers all over the world… and she doesn’t even use a computer.
Since the Twitter photos of Yolie Ball went viral, the 86-year-old has fielded lots of calls, including one from the Ellen DeGeneres Show. She’s been interviewed by a journalist over in London and Yolie is now a celebrity at her retirement community. Fellow residents wave at her and stop to say “Hi.”
It all started with a tweet sent by her 15-year-old granddaughter.
“She’s always on her Twitter thing,” said Yolie of her granddaughter Makenzie. “She’s really smart.”
Yolie lives with her husband Donald, 82, in Windmill Village, which is a community for people who are 55 and up.
Yolie’s daughter Sandra was visiting from Massachusetts and decided to take some photos of Yolie’s house. Yolie and Donald are trying to sell the mobile home that they’ve lived in for the last 11 years, so they can move to Knoxville to be closer to their other daughter.
Sandra insisted that Yolie pose in the photos.
“I had no intention of being in the photos,” said Yolie.
But, Sandra won out and Yolie posed for a photo in the living room while holding a book. She sat in a chair in the Florida room and posed for another photo. She posed for a photo leaning on the kitchen counter and posed for another one while peeking around a corner.
“It was just a fun thing that we were doing,” said Yolie.
A few weeks later, Sandra posted the photos to her Facebook page to spread the word about her parents’ home for sale.
Then, at 11 p.m. on March 25, Yolie’s granddaughter Makenzie, who lives in Virginia, saw the photos and decided to tweet them.
“MY GRANDMA IS TRYING TO SELL HER HOUSE IN FLORIDA AND THESE ARE THE PICS I AM LAUGHING SO HARD,” the teenager tweeted in all capital letters.
25,270 retweets later, Yolie Ball was an internet star.
“They took off, somehow,” said Yolie about the tweets.
As of Monday, March 30, 45,959 Twitter users had favorited Makenzie’s tweet, which got plenty of comments:
“That’s the best thing i’ve seen all day”
“This just made my week”
“She’s the cutest!!!! I like the peek around the door one best”
“Does the house come with four grandmas as shown in the pictures? If not, I’m not interested.”
“You’re grandma made my day!”
Yolie and her husband Donald, who will retire on March 31, after working his last shift as boat captain at Walt Disney World Resort’s Epcot Theme Park, are enjoying the wild internet ride.
“The aftermath has been just awesome. So much excitement has been created in our life,” she said.
Now, the couple hopes all the attention will generate interest in their 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home.
“I’m still waiting,” said Yolie.
